About

A Tradition of Winning

La Costa Canyon High School has established itself as an elite, championship-caliber team year after year in the challenging and rewarding sport of wrestling.

Like the school itself, the Mavericks Wrestling program is relatively young. But since the team’s inception in 1996, the La Costa Canyon Mavericks have already been League Champions eight times and CIF San Diego Section Champions twice.

As a team, the Mavericks have placed among the top 20 in California four times. Thus far a total of 33 LCC wrestlers have qualified for the state finals, with 17 wrestlers placing in the top 10 in the state. Two Maverick wrestlers, Ryan Williams and Bryan Grubbs, have become California State Champions.

LCC is led by Coach Dwayne Buth, himself a California State Champion and collegiate All American, and his experienced coaching staff.

The program enjoys enthusiastic support from parents and the community.

Dozens of volunteers insure the success of two tournaments hosted annually by LCC: the Jimmy Hamada Invitational (named for a deceased wrestler); and the Southern California Frosh Championships.

LCC has developed a reputation for staging excellent wrestling tournaments, and these events now attract teams from throughout the West and as far away as Colorado.

LCC continues its winning tradition as the place in San Diego’s coastal North County where champions are made — on and off the mat!
